"I believe art has the power to transport and transform us, whether in the creating or in the viewing."
Geometric shapes are a recurring theme in much of my work. Shape, line and color are most exciting to me as some of my favorite works are from the Cubism and Fauvism eras. Curiosity about most everything is why you’ll find a variety of subject matter in my work.
Style: Abstract/Expressionism • Impressionism • Landscape
Medium: Drawing • Pastel • Mixed Media
I approach my easel with my various interests in mind, striving to slow down, to spend time with them, and to record and explore them in a visual context. After studying art in college, I spent some time in my studio painting. Later on, I taught high school art, digital art, and photography courses including Career Technical Education. I moved on from teaching in 2017 and now spend more time at home, with friends, and especially more time at my easel. Pastels are my favorite medium to use. Unlike mediums that use a brush or other tool for application, I can hold them directly in my hand. I feel a closer connection to my work at the easel this way. Pastels are pure pigment with a little binder to hold the powdery pigment together in a stick form. The pastel hardness or softness is determined by how much binder is used; a soft pastel has less binder and more pure pigment. They are the same pigments used in oil paints so they are lightfast, vibrant and permanent. They are messy too but that's all part of the fun!
