Background & Artistic Beginnings
Rob MacIntosh was born in South Africa in 1949 and displayed artistic promise early—winning his first art award at just seven years old. He remains fully self-taught, drawing creative inspiration from his father and grandfather rather than formal training. Originally working as a commercial artist for nearly fifteen years, MacIntosh transitioned to fine art around 1980, motivated by his passion for painting.

Artistic Evolution
Early focus: He began with seascapes, especially after moving to the South African coast in 1982.
Broadening Horizons: His travels into the African bush later inspired richly detailed landscapes and wildlife artworks.
Americas & Recognition: In 1983, MacIntosh made his first visit to the USA, where established artists like Harley Brown and Bob Kuhn encouraged him to refine his focus; this helped springboard his rise as a wildlife artist After moving to the U.S. in 1988, he swiftly earned recognition—winning the Merit Award from the Society of Animal Artists in 1989. However, MacIntosh desired creative breadth beyond wildlife, ultimately expanding into seascapes, urban scenes, and landscapes.
Major Commissions & Lifestyle: In 2003, he returned to South Africa to complete extensive private commissions—including 26 works for the Rupert family and additional pieces for Capitec founder Jamie Mouton. He then moved back to the States with his wife and settled in Tucson, Arizona, where he continues to work with renewed artistic freedom.

He cites influences such as Carl Brenders, Terry Isaac, Ray Swanson, and Richard Estes.
