BRUCE BLACK

"For me, the Southwest landscape represents the human spirit: dark, unknowable, yet bright and alive. Being in the wilderness reminds us of our smallness and fragility, but also of the awe-inspiring power of nature that connects us with our spiritual side."

As a Southwestern landscape painter, I find inspiration in the natural beauty of the American Southwest. The rugged terrain, unique atmosphere, and captivating light of the region have captivated me since childhood. Growing up in Arizona, I spent much of my time exploring the Southwest and Northwest regions of the United States. I rounded up cattle in Utah during the summers, skied the Rockies in the winter, and backpacked around Northern Arizona. I even ventured into Wyoming's Tetons region during college. These experiences have become a part of who I am and are reflected in my artwork.

BRUCE BLACK

Bruce Black is an accomplished American painter specializing in realism painting within the realms of contemporary Impressionism and Tonalism. With a lifelong dedication to his craft, Bruce's artistic journey began in his early childhood, fostered by his grandparents, who introduced him to local gallery shows in Scottsdale, Arizona, where he wholeheartedly immersed himself in drawing and painting. Fueling his passion, Bruce pursued an art career, earning his undergraduate degree from the University of Arizona in 1993, followed by his graduate degree from the University of Delaware in 1998.

Following the completion of his studies, Bruce relocated to Portland, Oregon, where he worked as an artist and shared his expertise by teaching art at Willamette University. Additionally, he served as the exhibition designer for the esteemed Hallie Ford Museum of Art, which is affiliated with the university. Presently, Bruce resides in Phoenix, Arizona, with his wife Marla and son Liam, teaching art to junior high and high school students while actively showcasing his work whenever possible.

Bruce's artistic versatility shines through his proficiency in various art mediums, having explored several artistic styles throughout his career. While his initial fondness for watercolor painting endures, with his continued creation of breathtaking watercolor landscapes, Bruce has recently turned his attention to traditional themes using oil paints.
