PEGGY ERICKSON

"I work intuitively, blurring the boundaries between abstraction and life."

Peggy Erickson is an emerging Arizona artist who has recently found her stride creating contemporary, abstract paintings. She uses line and movement along with organic shapes and colors to evoke a curiosity in the viewer. While Erickson resides primarily in Arizona she also spends part of the year in Colorado and California. Prior to painting she was an equine photographer, making large scale fine arts prints. She finds that the transition from photographer to painter is a natural one as both art forms rely on compelling compositions and a creative use of light to create depth, form and interest.

Style: Abstract, Abstract Landscapes

Medium: Oil painter, Cold wax

Additional Bio and contact information

peggy erickson

All of her current works are in oil, she paints on stretched canvas and canvas paper. Each mark, layer, and color is a response to the landscape surrounding her. She is deeply inspired by the natural world. By painting it abstractly, the viewer has the benefit of interpreting each piece for themselves. She applies her paint with a variety of tools, scraping away parts, and painting them again, always leaving a history of what went before on the finished piece. This push and pull leads to variations in the work like lost edges and differing textures that keep the viewer’s eye interested and moving around the piece.

"I work intuitively, blurring the boundaries between abstraction and life. Pulling colors and shapes from my surroundings provides the foundation to begin a painting. Adding and subtracting paint in response to what’s on the canvas leads me to what’s next, until I reach a place where my work feels balanced, yet still has a raw, primitive feeling to it”.
